Strawberry Rasbora – Nano Aquarium Fish Overview

The strawberry rasbora is a tiny, peaceful freshwater fish native to heavily vegetated swamps of southern Thailand. Its soft red coloration and delicate appearance make it highly desirable for planted nano aquariums. Due to habitat loss, this species now thrives mainly in well-maintained home aquariums where stable water conditions are provided.

Strawberry Rasbora

Natural Habitat & Ideal Tank Setup

In nature, the strawberry rasbora lives in shallow, slow-moving waters filled with plants. A mature aquarium that mimics this environment is essential for long-term health and color retention.

Recommended tank conditions:

Heavily planted aquarium

Driftwood and dense vegetation

Floating plants to diffuse lighting

Gentle filtration with low water flow

Shoaling Behavior & Tank Mates

Strawberry rasboras are shy but very social fish. Keeping a group of at least 12 strawberry rasbora helps reduce stress and encourages natural schooling behavior. Larger groups allow males to display richer coloration while remaining peaceful.

Compatible tank mates include:

Caridina and Neocaridina shrimp

Kuhli loaches

Otocinclus catfish

Pygmy Corydoras

Small rasboras and blue-eye fish

Feeding Strawberry Rasbora

The strawberry rasbora has a very small mouth and prefers fine foods. A varied diet supports healthy growth and coloration.

Suitable foods:

Baby brine shrimp

Cyclops and daphnia

Mini bloodworms

Crushed flakes and micropellets

Feed small portions several times daily to avoid waste.

Breeding Strawberry Rasbora

Strawberry rasboras are continual spawners, laying small numbers of eggs regularly. In planted aquariums, some fry may survive naturally if cover is dense enough.
