Springtails

Springtails are tiny arthropods (under 2.5mm) that thrive in moist environments and serve as nature's cleanup crew. These wingless creatures use a unique spring-like tail to escape danger and feed on mold, fungi, and decaying organic matter. Essential for bioactive terrariums and soil health, they help maintain a balanced ecosystem by breaking down waste. Completely harmless to humans, springtails come in various colors and naturally colonize damp soil and leaf litter. Perfect for creating self-sustaining vivariums or improving soil vitality in your garden setup.

Size & Appearance: Tiny (up to 6mm), soft-bodied, wingless, 6 legs, with colors like white, grey, blue, or black.

Jumping: Use a folded furcula under the abdomen, releasing it to catapult into the air.

Habitat: Prefer high moisture; found in soil, mulch, leaf litter, compost, and damp indoor areas.

Diet: Primarily dead organic matter, fungi, algae, and microbes; some species can damage plants. 

Roles & Uses

Bioactive Systems: Excellent for terrariums/vivariums as they control mold and break down waste, creating a natural cycle.

Soil Health: Improve soil structure and support biodiversity, feeding predators like spiders and beetles.

Pest: Can become a nuisance indoors or damage young plants in large numbers, indicating excess moisture.

Container: Small plastic bin with substrate like charcoal, moss, or coco fiber.

Moisture: Keep substrate damp with misting; some water in the base.

Food: Yeast, powdered fish food, or rice flour.

Environment: Warm (65-80°F) with low light, away from direct sun.
