Selaginella Tamariscina – Resurrection Spike Moss

Selaginella Tamariscina is a rare and fascinating evergreen spikemoss famous for its remarkable ability to survive dry conditions. Commonly called a resurrection plant, it curls its foliage into a dry, brown cluster during periods of drought and gradually opens into a fresh green form when moisture returns. Its unusual appearance and miniature tree-like growth make it a prized plant for collectors, terrariums, and naturalistic displays.

Selaginella Tamariscina Plant Features

This species develops tufted, branching stems that form compact rosettes. Mature specimens can develop a small upright, tree-like structure, giving the plant a miniature bonsai appearance.

Common Name: Resurrection Plant, Resurrection Spike Moss

Scientific Name: Selaginella tamariscina

Plant Type: Lycophyte

Growth Habit: Tufted, branching, and rosette-forming

Potential Height: Up to around 45 cm in mature growth

Native Range: Asia

Natural Habitat: Warm, shaded rocky areas

Growth Rate: Slow

Unique Resurrection Ability

The most distinctive feature of Selaginella Tamariscina is its ability to tolerate periods of drying. When moisture becomes scarce, the branches curl inward and form a compact brown structure.

Once moisture becomes available again, the stems gradually unfold and regain their green appearance. This unusual adaptation allows the plant to survive challenging conditions that would severely affect many other moisture-loving plants.

Selaginella Tamariscina for Terrariums

Selaginella Tamariscina can be used as a unique specimen in naturalistic terrariums and miniature forest landscapes. Its branching structure can create the appearance of a tiny tree or aged woodland plant.

It works particularly well when positioned among rocks, mosses, and other small tropical plants. Its unusual form provides strong visual contrast against low-growing ground covers.

For terrarium cultivation, provide consistent humidity and moisture rather than intentionally allowing the plant to dry completely. The resurrection response is a natural survival mechanism, but regular growing conditions encourage healthier green growth.

Light Requirements

Provide bright, filtered or indirect light. The plant naturally grows in shaded environments and should be protected from strong direct sunlight.

Bright indirect light supports healthy growth.

Avoid harsh midday sunlight.

Gentle LED lighting can be suitable for enclosed terrariums.

Excessive light can dry the delicate foliage.

Watering & Humidity

Keep the growing medium lightly and consistently moist during active growth. Avoid prolonged waterlogging, as stagnant conditions can damage the roots and lower stems.

High humidity is beneficial, particularly in enclosed terrariums. Good airflow is still important to prevent excessive moisture from remaining around the foliage.

Temperature & Substrate

As a tropical and subtropical species, Selaginella Tamariscina prefers warm, stable conditions. Protect it from cold temperatures and sudden environmental changes.

Use a porous, well-draining substrate that retains some moisture without becoming compacted. A mixture containing sphagnum moss, fine bark, coco-based material, and other airy components can provide suitable conditions.

Growth & Maintenance

This is a relatively slow-growing plant and generally requires little pruning. Remove damaged sections carefully and maintain enough space around the plant for air circulation.

Its unusual branching structure can become more prominent as the plant matures, making older specimens particularly interesting for display.

Propagation

Healthy stems can be used for propagation. Place suitable sections on a moist growing medium and maintain warm, humid conditions. With stable moisture and suitable light, the cuttings can gradually establish and produce new growth.

Selaginella Tamariscina is an excellent choice for collectors who want a distinctive plant with an unusual survival adaptation and miniature tree-like appearance. Its resurrection behavior, textured foliage, and natural rocky-habitat character make it especially attractive for specialized terrarium collections.
