Selaginella picta – Painted Spike Moss
Selaginella picta is a beautiful, low-growing spike moss native to Southeast Asia, including regions of Vietnam, Laos, and southern China. It is prized for its dark green foliage marked with distinctive silvery-white to pale lime-green central stripes. Its compact, creeping growth makes it an excellent choice for terrariums, vivariums, moss gardens, and humid indoor displays.
Selaginella picta Plant Features
This attractive plant develops fine, delicate foliage that forms a dense, spreading carpet across the substrate. The contrasting central markings give the leaves a painted appearance, making it stand out among other green terrarium plants.
Common Name: Painted Spike Moss
Scientific Name: Selaginella picta
Plant Type: Lycophyte
Growth Habit: Creeping and mat-forming
Height: Around 10–15 cm
Origin: Southeast Asia
Growth Rate: Moderate under suitable conditions
Best Use: Terrariums, vivariums, moss gardens, and humid displays
Selaginella picta for Terrariums
Selaginella picta is particularly well suited to enclosed terrariums because it naturally prefers warm, humid environments. Its creeping stems gradually spread across moist substrate, creating a lush ground-cover effect.
It can be planted around rocks, wood, and other plants to create a layered forest-floor appearance. Its contrasting foliage also works well as a foreground plant in miniature tropical landscapes.
Light Requirements
Provide bright, indirect or filtered light for healthy growth. Direct sunlight can scorch the delicate foliage and may cause the attractive markings to fade.
- Bright filtered light is ideal.
- Avoid strong afternoon sunlight.
- Low light may result in slower growth.
- Gentle LED grow lighting can be used for enclosed setups.
Watering & Humidity
Selaginella picta requires consistent moisture to maintain healthy foliage. The substrate should remain slightly damp but never saturated or stagnant.
High humidity is especially important, with levels above 75% preferred for vigorous growth. Closed terrariums can naturally provide the humid conditions this plant needs.
Temperature & Substrate
Maintain warm and stable conditions between 18°C and 28°C. Protect the plant from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
Use a loose, moisture-retentive substrate that still provides good drainage. Fine sphagnum moss, peat-based mixes, and airy organic substrates are suitable choices.
Growth & Maintenance
Selaginella picta spreads horizontally and can gradually form a dense carpet. Regular trimming helps maintain its shape and prevents it from covering slower-growing plants.
Remove damaged or dying portions to keep the terrarium looking clean. Handle the delicate stems carefully when planting or rearranging the enclosure.
Propagation
Propagation can be done through healthy stem sections. Place the cuttings directly onto a moist substrate and maintain high humidity. With suitable moisture and warmth, new roots can develop and the plant can gradually establish itself.
Selaginella picta is an excellent choice for collectors looking for a distinctive terrarium ground cover with unusual foliage markings and a natural tropical appearance.
