neon tetra

The neon tetra is one of the most recognizable and popular freshwater aquarium fish, prized for its glowing blue stripe and vibrant red coloration. These colors run horizontally along the body, creating a striking contrast that stands out in both planted and community aquariums. Due to their small size and peaceful nature, neon tetra fish are suitable for aquarists of all experience levels and adapt well to stable, well-maintained tanks.

Neon tetras are schooling fish and should always be kept in groups of at least six individuals. When maintained in proper numbers, the neon tetra displays confident behavior and enhanced coloration while swimming gracefully through the middle and upper levels of the aquarium. Their calm temperament makes neon tetra fish compatible with other small, non-aggressive community species, making them a reliable choice for mixed freshwater setups.

A well-planted aquarium helps the neon tetra feel secure and encourages natural behavior. Live plants, driftwood, and rock structures provide shelter while mimicking their natural habitat. Neon tetra fish prefer soft, slightly acidic water and should only be added to fully cycled aquariums, as they can be sensitive to sudden changes in water parameters. Slow acclimation is strongly recommended for long-term health.

Feeding the neon tetra a varied and balanced diet supports vibrant coloration and overall vitality. High-quality flake food, micro pellets, and occasional frozen or freeze-dried foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms are readily accepted. With proper care, neon tetra fish remain active, colorful, and peaceful, making them an excellent long-term addition to freshwater aquariums.
