Microsorum Pteropus Green Gnome (Dwarf Java Fern)
Microsorum Pteropus Green Gnome, commonly known as Dwarf Java Fern, is a compact and highly sought-after variety of Java Fern. Native to Southeast Asia, this hardy aquatic plant is widely appreciated for its small size, attractive green foliage, and exceptional adaptability. Its low-maintenance nature makes it an excellent choice for beginners as well as experienced aquascapers.
Unlike rooted plants, Dwarf Java Fern naturally grows attached to driftwood, rocks, and other hardscape surfaces along rivers and streams. Its compact growth habit makes it ideal for nano aquariums, foreground to midground placement, and detailed aquascapes. The leaves contain natural compounds that make them less appealing to most herbivorous fish, helping the plant remain attractive even in community aquariums.
Appearance
Microsorum Pteropus Green Gnome features dense clusters of narrow, deep green leaves that typically reach around 10–15 cm in height. Its compact structure creates a lush and natural appearance without overwhelming the aquascape.
The plant spreads slowly through a creeping rhizome and can develop small plantlets on mature leaves. These plantlets can be separated and attached elsewhere to create new colonies throughout the aquarium.
Key Features
Compact dwarf variety of Java Fern
Rich green foliage with dense growth
Ideal for nano and planted aquariums
Excellent for attaching to wood and rocks
Resistant to most herbivorous fish
Suitable for beginners and low-tech setups
Care Requirements
Water Parameters
Temperature: 20°C – 28°C
pH: 5.0 – 8.0
Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water
Minimum Tank Size: 10 gallons
Dwarf Java Fern adapts well to a wide range of water conditions and remains healthy in both low-tech and high-tech aquariums.
Lighting
Low to moderate lighting is ideal. Under stronger lighting, the leaves may develop a darker green coloration, but excessive light can encourage algae growth or cause leaf damage.
CO₂ and Fertilization
One of the biggest advantages of Microsorum Pteropus Green Gnome is that it does not require additional CO₂ injection or nutrient-rich substrate. It absorbs nutrients directly from the water column and grows successfully in low-maintenance aquariums.
Planting and Placement
Never bury the rhizome in the substrate, as this can cause the plant to rot and die. Instead, attach it to driftwood, rocks, lava stone, or other hardscape materials using thread or aquarium-safe glue.
Its compact size makes it ideal for:
Nano aquariums
Foreground and midground placement
Nature-style aquascapes
Shrimp tanks
Low-tech planted aquariums
