Java Fern (Microsorum Pteropus) is one of the most popular and beginner-friendly aquatic plants in the aquarium hobby. Native to Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and parts of China, this hardy rhizomatous plant is prized for its adaptability, attractive foliage, and low maintenance requirements.

Unlike many aquarium plants, Java Fern does not require nutrient-rich substrate. It naturally grows attached to rocks, driftwood, and other surfaces in rivers and streams. Its ability to thrive in a wide range of water conditions makes it an excellent choice for community tanks, shrimp aquariums, and low-tech planted setups.

Appearance

Microsorum Pteropus features long, lance-shaped green leaves that grow from a creeping rhizome. Depending on aquarium conditions, the leaves can reach between 15–30 cm in height, making it an ideal midground to background plant.

Mature leaves often develop small black spots underneath. These are known as sporangia, the plant's reproductive structures, and are completely natural. Under suitable conditions, plantlets may also develop on older leaves.

Lighting

Low to moderate lighting is ideal. Strong lighting is unnecessary and may encourage algae growth on the leaves. The plant grows steadily even under basic aquarium lighting.

CO₂ and Fertilization

Java Fern grows successfully without CO₂ injection or specialized fertilizers. It absorbs most nutrients directly from the water column, making it perfect for low-maintenance aquariums.
