Gardneri Killifish – Colorful Top-Dwelling Nano Fish

The Gardneri Killifish (Fundulopanchax gardneri) is a hardy, vibrant freshwater species that stands out in any planted aquarium. Known for its intense blue tones and spotted patterning, the Gardneri Killifish is perfect for nano tanks and low-flow setups. This peaceful yet active fish naturally inhabits stagnant swamps and slow-moving waters in Nigeria, making it ideal for aquariums with minimal current.

With proper care, the Gardneri Killifish becomes a striking centerpiece near the surface of the aquarium.

Gardneri Killifish Appearance and Size

The Gardneri Killifish features brilliant blue coloration accented by red spotting and detailed finnage. Males are typically more colorful and display longer fins, while females have more subdued tones.

Key Features:

Bright blue body with red spotting

Elegant flowing fins (especially in males)

Adult size: 2.5–3 inches

Surface-dwelling behavior

The Gardneri Killifish occupies the top level of the tank and thrives in aquariums with floating plants for cover.

Ideal Tank Setup for Gardneri Killifish

A Gardneri Killifish performs best in a calm, planted aquarium with gentle or no water flow. Because this species is known to jump, a tight-fitting lid or lowered water level is essential.

Recommended Tank Parameters:

Temperature: 68°–79°F (20°–26°C)

pH: 6.0–7.5

KH: 4–8 dKH

Minimum Tank Size: 10 gallons (pair or trio)

Floating plants are highly appreciated, and this fish will not damage ornamental plants.

Diet and Feeding Requirements

The Gardneri Killifish is a micropredator and prefers a protein-rich diet. While not overly picky, it thrives on varied meaty foods.

Recommended Foods:

Frozen or live Tubifex

Daphnia

Artemia (Brine Shrimp)

Appropriately sized bloodworms

Fruit flies (excellent live option)

High-quality floating dry foods (may take time to accept)

Supplementing with small amounts of spirulina or vegetable matter supports balanced nutrition.

Compatibility and Breeding

The Gardneri Killifish is generally peaceful and may coexist with calm species that enjoy low flow and will not outcompete it for food. However:

Avoid aggressive or fast-feeding fish

May prey on very small tankmates

Other species may consume fry during breeding

For best results, many aquarists keep one male with multiple females. The Gardneri Killifish is relatively easy to breed in captivity under stable conditions.
