Clown Killifish – Vibrant Nano Schooling Fish

Clown Killifish (Epiplatys annulatus), also known as the Banded Panchax or Rocket Killifish, is a colorful and peaceful freshwater fish perfect for nano and planted aquariums. This tiny killifish displays beautiful stripes and a uniquely patterned tail, adding bright, eye-catching movement near the water surface. Clown Killifish are ideal for hobbyists who want an active and elegant top-dwelling fish in small community setups.

Appearance and Size

Clown Killifish features striking banded patterns with alternating light and dark stripes and vibrant colors on its tail. Males tend to show more intense hues and slightly longer fins, while females are typically subtler but equally graceful. Adults usually reach about 1–1.5 inches (2.5–3.5 cm) in length.

Behavior and Schooling

This species is peaceful and social, thriving when kept in groups of 6 or more. Clown Killifish are top-level swimmers that prefer calm, slow-moving water and spend much of their time near the surface or mid-levels of the aquarium. A well-planted tank with floating plants gives them both comfort and natural habitat mimicry.

Tank Setup and Water Conditions

Clown Killifish prefer stable, soft, slightly acidic water with gentle flow. Planted aquariums with plenty of floating vegetation and a tight-fitting lid help create ideal conditions, as this species is known to jump. Recommended parameters include:

Temperature: 72–79Β°F (22–26Β°C)

pH: 5.5–7.0

Tank size: Minimum 5–10 gallons for schooling groups
Soft substrates and shaded surface areas improve comfort and encourage natural behavior.

Diet and Feeding

Clown Killifish are micropredators and thrive on a varied diet of small live or frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and mosquito larvae. They may accept tiny high-quality flakes or micro pellets, but live and frozen foods are particularly beneficial for health and coloration.

Compatibility and Care Tips

As a peaceful species, Clown Killifish is suitable for community tanks with other small, non-aggressive fish that won’t outcompete them for food. Avoid larger or aggressive species. While generally shrimp-safe, they may consume fry of tiny invertebrates.

Clown Killifish add unique charm and lively motion to nano aquariums and are a great choice for aquarists looking for a small, eye-catching species with moderate care needs.
