Bucephalandra Godzilla

Bucephalandra Godzilla is a rare and highly desirable aquatic plant native to the streams and rivers of Borneo. Known for its large size, heavily textured leaves, and impressive coloration, it is one of the most distinctive Bucephalandra varieties available to aquascapers. Its long, wavy foliage displays deep green, blue, bronze, and reddish tones with a beautiful metallic sheen under quality aquarium lighting.

Bucephalandra Godzilla Plant Profile

Bucephalandra Godzilla is a hardy rhizomatous epiphyte that naturally grows attached to rocks and driftwood in fast-flowing tropical streams. Its larger leaves and robust growth habit make it an excellent focal point in planted aquariums.

Scientific Name: Bucephalandra sp. "Godzilla"

Plant Type: Rhizomatous epiphyte

Origin: Borneo

Growth Rate: Slow

Difficulty: Easy

Placement: Foreground, midground, or feature plant

Height: 10–20 cm

Growth Habit: Clumping and spreading through rhizomes

Appearance and Coloration

One of the standout features of Bucephalandra Godzilla is its dramatic leaf structure. The leaves are elongated with strongly undulating edges and a thick, leathery texture.

New growth often emerges in shades of reddish-brown, bronze, or copper before gradually maturing into dark green foliage. Under strong full-spectrum lighting, the leaves can develop metallic blue, purple, and silver iridescent highlights.

Aquarium Care Requirements

This plant adapts well to a wide range of freshwater aquarium conditions and is suitable for both beginners and experienced aquascapers.

Lighting

Low to medium light

Higher light enhances coloration and iridescence

Avoid excessive light to reduce algae growth

Water Parameters

Temperature: 22–28°C

pH: 6.0–8.0

Soft to moderately hard water

Stable water conditions are preferred

CO2 and Fertilization

CO2 injection is not essential but significantly improves growth speed, leaf size, and coloration. Regular liquid fertilization helps maintain healthy foliage and vibrant colors.

Planting and Placement

Like all Bucephalandra species, Bucephalandra Godzilla should never have its rhizome buried in the substrate. Instead, attach it to:

Driftwood

Lava rock

Dragon stone

Aquarium hardscape

Over time, the roots naturally anchor themselves to the surface.
