Bolbitis heudelotii, commonly known as African Water Fern, is an elegant slow-growing aquatic plant perfect for creating natural, jungle-style aquascapes. Its delicate, semi-transparent green fronds add visual depth when attached to driftwood or rocks. This rhizome-based fern thrives in soft, slightly acidic water with low to medium lighting and good water flow, making it ideal for established tanks. While it grows steadily in standard conditions, supplementing with CO2 and liquid nutrients accelerates growth and enhances coloration. Easy to propagate by dividing the rhizome, it's a rewarding choice for aquascapers seeking low-maintenance, long-term plant growth.

Appearance & Growth

Fronds: Feathery, pinnate (feather-like) leaves, ranging from dark green (low light) to brighter, translucent green (high light).

Size: Can reach 10-40 cm (4-18 inches) in length.

Growth: Slow, but speeds up with CO2 and nutrients; ideal for midground/background.

Attachment: Attach to hardscape (wood, rock) with thread/glue; do not bury the rhizome.

Lighting: Low to medium; higher light with CO2 yields brighter growth.

Water: Soft, slightly acidic (pH 5.5-7); good flow helps prevent algae
