Apistogramma macmasteri – Macmaster’s Dwarf Cichlid
Apistogramma macmasteri is a hardy and colorful South American dwarf cichlid native to Colombia, widely appreciated for planted and biotope aquariums. This species is known for its manageable size, peaceful nature, and vibrant coloration, making Apistogramma macmasteri a reliable choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists. Males display striking red and blue tones, while females remain smaller and develop a bright yellow color during breeding.

Size, Appearance, and Behavior
Male Apistogramma macmasteri grow to around 3–3.5 inches, while females reach 2–2.5 inches. The species is generally calm but can become territorial, especially during spawning. Keeping Apistogramma macmasteri as a bonded pair or in a harem of one male with multiple females helps reduce stress and aggression.
Tank Setup and Water Parameters
A minimum tank size of 20 gallons is recommended for Apistogramma macmasteri. Soft, sandy substrate allows natural digging behavior, while caves, driftwood, and dense plants provide shelter. Ideal water conditions include a pH range of 5.5–7.0 and temperatures between 24–28°C. Stable water parameters are essential for long-term health.
Diet and Tank Mates
Apistogramma macmasteri are carnivorous and thrive on frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms. High-quality pellets may also be accepted. Compatible tank mates include peaceful species like neon tetras, cardinal tetras, and bristlenose plecos.
