Anubias nana is a highly popular freshwater aquarium plant valued for its compact size, durability, and ease of care. Native to Cameroon and Nigeria, this dwarf plant adapts well to a wide range of aquarium conditions and is suitable for both fully and partially submerged setups. Because Anubias nana grows slowly and requires minimal maintenance, it is an excellent choice for low-tech and planted aquariums.

Plant Structure and Appearance

Anubias nana has thick rhizomes and firm, dark green leaves that resist damage from herbivorous fish. The leaves grow close to the substrate, forming a dense and attractive carpet-like appearance when properly placed. With a maximum height of around 8 inches, this plant works well as a foreground or low midground plant while providing natural hiding areas for bottom-dwelling fish.

Aquarium Placement and Lighting

This plant does not require nutrient-rich substrates and should be attached to rocks or driftwood rather than buried. Anubias nana thrives under low to medium lighting, making it ideal for shaded areas of the aquarium. Excessive light may encourage algae growth on its slow-growing leaves, so moderate lighting is recommended.

Water Conditions and Maintenance

Anubias nana performs best in water temperatures between 22–28°C with a pH range of 5.5–7. The plant tolerates slight variations in water parameters and remains stable once established. Routine maintenance is minimal, requiring only occasional trimming of older leaves.
